Our Methodology and Safety Standards

Our Approach

At SheWorks, we utilize a globally recognized, grassroots plastic upcycling methodology. By operating our own technical workspace, we take control of local plastic waste, transforming it from an environmental hazard into sustainable economic opportunities for our trainees.

Operational Safety Protocols

Safety is the foundational pillar of our workspace. We adhere to strict guidelines to protect our team and trainees during every step of the upcycling process.

Operating the Machinery

While our machines are designed for accessibility, they require respect and caution. All trainees and machine operators are required to use proper personal protective equipment (PPE) at all times, including safety glasses, heat-resistant welding gloves, and hearing protection.

Thermal Processing Standards

Temperature control is critical to our operation. Keeping plastic within its specific melting zone is entirely safe, but burning plastic releases harmful fumes. Our workspace utilizes strict temperature monitoring, and we mandate the use of carbon-filtered masks when melting plastic to ensure the air remains safe to breathe.

Plastic

Material Sorting & Properties

Not all plastics are created equal. Before upcycling, our team is rigorously trained to identify, sort, and understand the precise materials we are working with to ensure structural quality and operational safety.

Standard Categorization

We expertly categorize plastics using standard recycling codes. We separate waste into highly specific bins, focusing heavily on processing PET, HDPE, PVC, LDPE, PP, and PS. Proper segregation prevents chemical mixing during the melting process.

Water Density Sorting

To ensure pure plastic batches, we employ advanced sorting techniques like the float-test. By utilizing water density, we can submerge shredded mixed plastics to separate them: HDPE, LDPE, and PP will float, while PET, PVC, and PS will sink.

Physical Properties

We map the exact physical characteristics of each polymer. Understanding optimal melting temperatures—which range from 130°C for HDPE to over 260°C for PET—is crucial for safely configuring our extrusion and injection machines.

Visual Identification

When recycling codes are missing from collected waste, our team uses visual and tactile property tests. We assess clarity, flexibility, and snap-behavior to accurately identify unlabeled plastic polymers safely.

At SheWorks, we don't just use machines—we engineer them. Utilizing advanced CAD files, precision laser-cut blueprints, and strict Bills of Materials, our team constructs specialized, industrial-grade recycling machinery. Here is a look at the technology powering our workspace.

Shredder Machine
The Basic Shredder

The core of our plastic workspace. This machine uses a powerful motor to grind collected plastic waste into uniform, workable flakes, preparing it for the melting process.

  • Precision Engineering: Built using laser-cut steel parts for the shredding axes and hex blades.
  • Custom Framework: Welded, heavy-duty framework designed from exact technical blueprints.
  • Safe Electronics: Assembled with a dedicated, secure electronics box for safe operation.

This machine heats the shredded plastic flakes and plunges the melted polymer into custom molds to create detailed, solid objects.

  • Hopper Assembly: Custom-built hopper to ensure a smooth, continuous feed of plastic flakes.

Utilizing an electric oven and a heavy-duty car jack system, this machine presses melted plastic into large, solid shapes like bowls, plates, and building materials.

This machine melts plastic and continuously pushes it through a nozzle. It is highly versatile, used for making continuous beams, bricks, or wrapping plastic around molds.

  • Custom Nozzles: Interchangeable nozzles designed to create different shapes and thicknesses.

We actively pitch to local enterprises using tailored corporate presentations. By partnering with SMEs and corporations, we intercept bulk plastic waste directly from the source before it ever reaches a landfill.

Collection Guidelines

Quality control begins at the collection point. We utilize clear instructional materials to ensure all donated plastic is thoroughly washed, dried, and stripped of non-plastic labels or caps before entering our facility.
